Parents of sick or premature babies to receive care packages

Care packages filled with essential items for parents of premature or poorly babies have been donated to the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, thanks to Louie’s Helping Hand.

Louie’s Helping Hand was set up by Matt and Bexy Corbett, from Exeter, in memory of their son Louie, who was born 15 weeks early and sadly passed away at just four days old. Following their experience, Matt and Bexy decided that they wanted to produce boxes full of essential items for parents whose baby was either being transferred to another hospital or moved to a neonatal unit.

Along with support from their friends and family, Matt and Bexy raised funds to put together the boxes through crowdfunding, sponsored runs and charity cake sales. Filled with items such as hand sanitizer, toothbrushes, a notepad and a handmade cardigan and hat, the boxes are designed to give parents essential items in difficult and sometimes fast-moving situations. The boxes also include a leaflet to try and give parents some tips, words of advice and details for local services that may be useful.

Bexy said: “After our experience, we knew that we wanted to help others at the beginning of their journey - families who are being transferred between hospitals and/or entering the neonatal intensive care unit. We wanted to try to make this start to their journey easier, and make sure parents look after themselves as well as their baby.”

Jo Bassett, Deputy Head of Midwifery and Gynaecology at the RD&E, said: “We have been touched to receive the boxes and to see to hard work, thought and effort that Matt and Bexy have put into this. We are sure this will make a difference to our families at a time of need. Thank you again.”

Ian Roome, Head of Fundraising at the RD&E Charity, said: “A huge thank you to Matt and Bexy and all those who have fundraised and helped to create these fantastic boxes for parents in our neonatal unit or those who have had to transfer between hospitals. Donations like these help to make what can be a very difficult time a little bit easier.”
