Unicef award RD&E's neonatal unit as a gold standard

The Neonatal Unit at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E) is the first level 2 neonatal unit in the UK to achieve the Unicef UK Baby Friendly Initiative Gold award, which was presented at the Trust this week.

The Baby Friendly accreditation, set up by Unicef and the World Health Organisation, is a global programme based on a set of evidence-based standards which are designed to provide parents with the best possible care to build close and loving relationships with their baby and to feed their baby in ways which will support optimum health and development. Facilities implement the standards in stages over a number of years and are externally assessed by Unicef UK at each stage.

Exeter mum raises thousands for the ward which cares for her son

An Exeter mum has smashed her £2,000 fundraising target to raise money for a ward at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E), which has cared for her son all of his life.

Melanie Peck’s 22-month-old son, Will, was born with Pallister Hall syndrome, a rare genetic disease which means that he suffers from seizures, breathing difficulties and other complications. This has resulted in 13 hospital admissions since he was born, sadly including both Christmases and his first birthday.

CQC survey results praise RD&E inpatient services

99% of inpatients at the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E) reported that they were treated with dignity and respect, according to national survey results released this month.

The annual CQC NHS Inpatient Survey, which looks at the care provided to patients during their stay, surveyed 659 of the patients who were discharged from the RD&E in July 2019. Patients assessed the Trust on a variety of areas, including whether they felt they received enough help with eating, drinking or dressing, whether they had confidence and trust in the staff caring for them and whether their questions were answered clearly during their stay.

Cancer services rated highly at the RD&E

Cancer services at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust (RD&E) have been highly rated by patients after achieving more ‘above expected’ results than any other Trust in the country, according to results released recently.

The annual National Cancer Patient Experience Survey, now in its ninth year, is designed to monitor national progress on cancer care; to provide information to drive local quality improvements and to inform the work of groups supporting cancer patients, including the voluntary sector.
