Five ways to stay well and out of hospital this winter

The winter period is always incredibly busy for hospitals and we expect this winter to be no different. The fact is that colder weather usually means more illness and more accidents and that means demand for our services, particularly our Emergency Department, becomes very high. Meeting this demand can be challenging but we plan in advance with our partners to ensure we are ready for the winter period. The plans we put in place include additional staff, closer work with GPs and community teams, and treating people without the need for a bed. As always, our absolute priority is to deliver safe and high quality care even in the busiest of times.

You can help us to keep the hospital running smoothly by taking five routine steps to stay well this winter – and out of hospital. This will be good for you but also good for us. Fewer people through our doors means it will be easier for us to deliver safe, high quality care to all those who really need to be in hospital this winter.

Devon’s first wave of Nursing Associates set to finish training

A county-wide pilot designed to train a new generation of frontline nursing staff has proved to be a great success as its first wave of recruits near the end of their training.

Devon, which faces unique challenges attracting registered nurses due to its large rural area and shortage of supporting transport routes, is one of 11 first-wave ‘nursing associate’ pilot sites and the only Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP)-wide site selected and funded by Health Education England (HEE).

The RD&E is one of the first NHS trusts awarded Veteran Aware accreditation

As the nation marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital has become one of the 24 acute hospital trusts in the country to be accredited as a Veteran Aware hospital.

Hospitals accredited by the Veterans Covenant Hospital Alliance (VCHA) will lead the way in improving NHS care for veterans and members of the armed forces community by: providing training to staff to be aware of veterans’ specific needs; making past and present servicemen and women aware of appropriate charities or NHS services beneficial to them, such as mental health services or support with financial and/or benefit claims; and ensuring that the armed forces community is never disadvantaged compared to other patients, in line with the NHS’s commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant.

RD&E and North Bristol NHS Trust join forces to deliver cutting-edge genomics testing for patients

A new South West Genomic Laboratory Hub has been announced as one of only seven hubs that will deliver genomic testing for patients with cancer or rare disease as part of a new national network.

The Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust will work in partnership with North Bristol NHS Trust to provide potentially life-changing diagnosis and move towards a more personalised approach to treatment. The Exeter Genetics Laboratory is one of three designated providers of specialised endocrine tests for patients throughout England and the national centre for monogenic diabetes and hyperinsulinism testing. Our flagship rapid whole exome sequencing for patients with rare disease will be upgraded to whole genome sequencing.
