Choose well this winter

The winter period always brings additional pressure on hospital services and the hospital is currently experiencing a significant amount of pressure.

Pete Adey, the RD&E’s Director of Operations, said: “As anticipated, the first week of January has been exceptionally busy and the hospital is seeing a higher number of patients than normal, particularly the elderly, suffering from conditions more common during the winter.

“The winter period always brings additional pressure and our priority throughout this time is to maintain safe, high quality and compassionate care for our patients. We have planned carefully for this busier period and put in place extra resilience measures to help us manage demand. We are also working closely with our partner organisations in Devon to discharge our patients safely from hospital as soon as possible and free up bed capacity.

“These measures will help to manage this challenging period but it remains important for people to think carefully about whether they need to access busy emergency departments or whether they can receive the help they require from their local GP, minor injury unit, pharmacist or the NHS 111 helpline.

“We would also ask people not to visit friends or relatives in hospital if you have suffered from symptoms of the highly infectious Norovirus bug until you have been symptom free for at least 48 hours.”
