Culm Ward cake sale rasies over £800 to revamp relative’s room

Staff on Culm Ward at the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital have raised over £800 to help refurbish the ward’s relative’s room thanks to a cake sale and raffle.

The team, led by nurses Tracy Bennellick and Megan Denning, were keen to refurbish the room used by the families of patients to make it more homely and welcoming.

Tracy said: “The relative’s room on Culm was looking tired and in need of a makeover. Myself and Megan were chatting about how it needed a complete revamp so we decided to organise a cake sale and raffle to raise some money.”

The relative’s room is used at times when family members require a bit of privacy away from the busy respiratory ward. Tracy and Megan were keen to make it a more calming and comfortable space that is more pleasant to spend time in.

They organised the sale on their day off, and sold and array of cakes and bakes to hospital staff and visitors. They also held a raffle with some fantastic prizes up for grabs, including meals in top restaurants, chocolates and florist vouchers.

“The response from the ward team was great and lots of people helped by baking cakes and donating raffle prizes.  We were completely overwhelmed by the generosity and support we received and raised a fantastic £838.76 with donations still coming in.” Tracy added. “We are hoping to redecorate and furnish the room, buy some new pictures, a nice tea set, some comfortable chairs and add a few home comforts.”

Tracy and Megan would also like to thank a number of local businesses who donated raffle prizes: Lord Haldon Hotel, Buckerell Lodge, Abode, The City Gate, Twisted Oak, Farmers Union, Village Inn, Exeter Chiefs, Finlake, Crafty Cakes, Sylvania Cakes, Princesshay, John Lewis, Crealy, Ruby Burgers, Pepper White, Poppy's Florist, Bunyip Beads and Buttons and Le Chique Hair and Beauty.
