Couple to cycle from John O’Groats to Land’s End for wedding with a difference

Keen cyclists Anna Reffell and Lee Atkinson, from Exmouth, are embarking on a 1400mile charity cycle challenge to mark the start of their married life together.

The couple, who met eight years ago at the Teign Valley Pedal Bashers Cycling group, will complete the ‘End to End’ cycling challenge from  John O’Groats to Land’s End, and will be making a pit-stop at the famous Old Blacksmiths Shop in Grenta Green to get married.

Anna, who works as a Trauma Nurse Practitioner at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, said: “When Lee asked me to marry him, we knew we did not want an ordinary wedding. We met through our interest in cycling and fell in love. So it seemed natural for us to include a cycling theme within our wedding plans.”

They plan to start their cycle on 5th June from Wick in Scotland before arriving at Grenta to ‘tie the knot’ on the 13th June in the presence of a small group of family and friends. They will even be continuing the cycling theme on their big day, arriving by tandem and joining Lee’s grandchildren on a cycle around the village for some wedding photos.  Anna and Lee will then continue their cycle as a married couple, returning home on 28th June.

Finally, the couple will be celebrating their nuptials with family and friends back home by organising a ‘post wedding festival’ and a bike ride with their cycling clubs in July.

Throughout their challenge, Anna and Lee will be raising money for two charities – Cancer Research and the British Heart Foundation – through sponsorship and wedding present donations.

“Having our friends and family supporting us at our wedding and wedding party will make both our days very special. However what would make our wedding complete is to know others may benefit from our happiness by us raising money for charity.” added Anna. “We have both chosen a charity in memory of a parent who is sadly not with us now, who we both would have dearly loved to have been with us on our special day.”
