RD&E Consultant, Dr Andrew Redfern, providing specialist imaging services for the London Olympic athletes

RD&E Consultant musculoskeletal radiologist Dr Andrew Redfern will be on duty providing specialist imaging services for Olympic athletes competing in London this summer.

Dr Andrew Redfern

He has already provided professional support to the Olympic training in Weymouth and next month he will join the army of health professionals in London who have given up their own time to provide world class care for the competitors. Dr Redfern, who works at the RD&E Wonford hospital and has been the sports imaging expert for the Exeter Chiefs rugby team for the past six years, said: “I am particularly looking forward to responding to the variety of high performance sports injuries we anticipate during the games. On a professional and personal level it should be an enjoyable and unique experience with pride which comes with providing the best service to top sportsmen and women.”

A specialist purpose-built centre is expected to turn around about 100 MRI scans within 24 hours at peak times and long after the Olympics the facilities will benefit local NHS patients for years to come.

Dr Redfern is one of two consultant radiologists from the RD&E on duty for this historic event.
