RD&E virtual maternity unit tour launch

Women and their families can now have a virtual tour of the RD&E maternity unit in Exeter on the hospital website.

RD&E Associate Director of Midwifery & Patient Care Tracey Reeves said: “We recognise that women and their partners can be reassured if they feel they are familiar with the place where they plan to have their baby and know what care and support they will receive before, during and immediately after the birth.

“The information in the virtual tour film is presented by members of our midwifery team. The content is divided into three sections – the Antenatal & Post Natal Ward, the Labour Ward and the Low Risk Birth Unit. The films can be viewed on our public website and on dvd copies available from community midwives. For those patients with a particular anxiety or complications in pregnancy we can arrange for a tour in person at the hospital.

“We hope providing this film will provide reassurance and information for parents-to-be and ensure the privacy and dignity of women in our care is not compromised on the unit by large groups of additional visitors. The maternity unit at the Centre for Women’s Health is busy, with over 3,500 babies born each year, so sometimes visitors could not always see the facilities because they were being used. We hope the tour film is more convenient for parents to see the environment and learn key points about the care we will provide. It should also mean that our midwifery staff have more time to focus on providing care for our patients.”
