Emergency incident exercise

The Royal Devon & Exeter hospital hosted a major incident tabletop exercise today (Thursday 18 November) with city-wide agencies to see how they would respond to a scenario which closed down key parts of the site.

The exercise scenario was the crash of a helicopter close to the helipad at the RD&E Wonford with gas cylinder explosions and access to key services like the A&E and orthopaedic hospital being restricted and the evacuation of neighbouring residential properties. Representatives from Devon & Cornwall Police, South Western Ambulance Service Trust, Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, NHS Devon Provider Services, Exeter City Council and Devon County Council worked with the RD&E in planning the response to this exercise incident.

RD&E Chief Operating Officer Elaine Hobson said: “Exercises of this kind are useful opportunities for us to work through challenging circumstances with key partner organisations. This particular scenario tested how we would maintain essential emergency health care services whilst colleagues in the fire, police and ambulance services managed the immediate aftermath of the crash, evacuation and enforcement of an exclusion zone.”
