Our commitment to you - Transgender


We embrace and value all types of diversity among our workforce. It makes the RD&E a richer community and better able to look after the full range of patients we serve.


We want our transgender staff to be fully engaged and comfortable to present in any gender, without fear of discrimination. We will recognise the presented gender identity of individuals, regardless of their stage in transitioning, passability or whether they hold a Gender Recognition Certificate.


The process of correcting gender as well as living as a transitioned person can be difficult, for all concerned. We are committed to providing all the support we can … this webpage spells out the general principles we will follow.


An Individual Approach
We know that people who transition need to work through a range of issues from dealing with reactions from colleagues and patients to use of toilet and changing facilities. Everyone’s needs for support will be different, so we will work with you to plan how we can best help you through the transition process and into your true gender.


One of our HR Team, who understands the issues people face when transitioning, will support you and your manager in making the change at work and working in your new identity.



We will never share any information concerning past gender identity with your manager, colleagues, or patients without agreeing with you what should be shared, how and why. We will agree with you what to do with the records we hold which reflect your past identity.


Time off for treatment
We will count any time you need off for treatment related to your gender transition no less favourably than as if it were sick leave. We will work with you to agree how best to manage this, based on the principles we use for managing sickness absence.


Keeping your talent at RD&E
According to the Department of Health, 16% of transitioned people feel they have to move employer after their surgery, to start afresh. We don’t want anyone to feel they have to leave us, so we will work with anyone who is transitioning to consider
  • options for moving to a different job at the RD&E, if you feel a fresh start in a new workplace is best for you
  • how we can help colleagues and patients, if necessary, understand what you are doing
  • any flexibility you may need in dress codes, use of changing or toilet facilities, delivery of services to patients or other work duties
  • how we can help manage any media attention
  • how to address any insurance and pension implications of your transition
  • managing your previous records with us.
  • an action plan / timetable for your transition at work.

Applying for jobs

If you have corrected your gender, it can be difficult applying for jobs with an employer who knew you before you transitioned.


We will work with you to agree how to …

  • manage any inconsistencies between your personal history in job applications and your present gender identity
  • handle the gender transition and any related treatment in occupational health questionnaires
  • manage information in your sick record that may disclose your previous identity.
  • support you in seeking to avoid any DBS application revealing your past identity, against your wishes, as far as is practicable. The DBS can provide further information on how they do this through .
  • provide evidence of your identity, without expecting you to produce a Gender Recognition Certificate
  • refer to your gender identity in job references.
  • support you at interview; for instance, if you go to a job interview with us, you might like us to ensure there is someone on the interview team from HR who understands your situation.

Support groups


The LGBT Collective website has further information on other support groups for transgender people, across the SW region. Intercom Trust is a local charity which campaigns on lgbt issues, provides all kinds of support as well as a safe place to make friends and socialise with like-minded people. They also offer a free and confidential helpline – 0800 612 3010. TransUnite can also provide details of local support groups, both online and face-to-face.


The County Council also has an LGBT network – you do not have work for the County to join. Meetings are nearby the RD&E and they have a thriving e-mail community you can join.


Zero tolerance of discrimination

If you are treated less favourably because of your gender status, whether by staff, patients or visitors – that could be discrimination. We all have the right to be free of discrimination, so if you think this may be happening to you, we want to do something about it … why not call one of the people who can help to talk through what’s happening?
