Facial trauma
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery provides an emergency service to treat facial injuries. These patients are usually referred to us from the Emergency Department or from our Minor Injury Units.
Facial trauma injuries include:
- Damage to teeth
- Teeth knocked out
- Soft tissue lacerations of the face, head and neck
- Facial bone fractures: cheekbone, eye socket, lower jaw, upper jaw, nose, forehead
Treatments
The majority of treatments can be carried out in the Emergency Department (ED) under local anaesthetic and the patient can usually be discharged home.
More complex injuries will require emergency admission for treatment under general anaesthetic (where medicines are used to send you to sleep).
