Ophthalmology (West of England Eye Unit)

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery which deals with eye disorders, including cataracts and glaucoma, as well as emergency eye problems.

Our ophthalmology department is run from the West of England Eye Unit (WEEU), based at the RD&E Wonford Hospital. Our specialist glaucoma unit is based at Heavitree Hospital.

We have an outpatient unit, a day case surgery unit, a theatre block, a specialist glaucoma unit, an eye emergency service, and dedicated optometry and orthoptic departments. We also run services in Heavitree Hospital, Axminster Hospital, Tiverton Hospital and Sidmouth Hospital. The orthoptic service also serves the smaller community hospitals such as Crediton and Seaton.

The ophthalmology team consists of ophthalmologists (doctors who specialise in eye disorders), specialist nurses and eye health care professionals, such as orthoptists, optometrists, opticians, and practitioners, plus a great support team of ophthalmic technicians.
