Occupational health is the promotion and maintenance of health and well being at work. Employers use occupational health practitioners to undertake:

  • Workplace risk assessment
  • Pre-employment screening
  • Health surveillance
  • Medical advice on sickness absence or early retirements
  • Stress counselling
  • Drug and alcohol screening
  • Immunisation screening and vaccinations where relevant

Exeter Occupational Health Service, which is part of the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, provides a comprehensive range of occupational health services to the Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust and other regional NHS Trusts. Services are available to their employees and are usually accessed by the employee’s line manager.

Exeter Occupational Health Service is also proud to be a member of the Department of Health NHS Plus scheme, which supports NHS occupational health departments providing services to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) on a chargeable basis.

SMEs usually employ less than 500 staff and are unlikely to run their own occupational health department but, in the interest of employees’ health, may want access to an occupational health service.

Businesses can find that they are breaking the law or facing liability claims if they neglect staff health and welfare. Responsible employers want their staff to be well because staff who are off sick or leave prematurely through ill health will normally be costly to the business.
