Emergency care (Paediatric Assessment Unit)

We work closely with the RD&E's Emergency Department (ED) to offer excellent care if your child has to come to hospital in an emergency.

We have a paediatric assessment unit, which means that children and teenagers can be seen in a suitable area by doctors and nurses who specialise in looking after and treating children and young people. Our unit is open from 10am to 10pm.

More on what we do

On arrival, you and your child will be greeted at the reception desk and your address details checked. Your child will be assessed (triaged) by a nurse.

We treat all patients in the order of their clinical priority, not by time of arrival to the unit. This means that a patient who arrives after you might be seen before you if their condition is more urgent. Arriving by ambulance does not necessarily mean you will be seen sooner than if you had walked in to the department.
