Chest pain services
The RD&E offer a comprehensive chest pain service, including a Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic. The clinic provides urgent assessment of patients with suspected angina who are referred by their GP. A team of specialist nurses run these clinics, working closely with consultants specialising in the treatment of coronary artery disease. The specialist nurses are highly trained to assess chest pain symptoms.
Many patients can be reassured that their symptoms are not due to angina, although sometimes further tests are needed, usually with a specialist heart scan.
More on what we do
The department has a team of 8 consultant cardiologists with specialist skills in the assessment and management of coronary artery disease.
These doctors provide investigation and treatment through the cardiac catheter labs to both outpatients with more stable conditions, and those admitted to hospital.
They also provide the 24/7 emergency service treating patients with heart attacks and some other life threatening heart conditions (called ‘primary PCI’).
