Cardiology (heart conditions)

Cardiology is the branch of medicine which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases and defects. The Royal Devon & Exeter Cardiology Department provides a comprehensive service for the assessment and treatment of cardiac disease to the local East Devon population and, for some conditions, to people across the Peninsula.

We look after people with a wide variety of problems such as chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, loss of consciousness or high blood pressure. The majority of people are referred following assessment by their General Practitioner but we also receive referrals from other health care professionals for a specialist opinion. We receive referrals from across the region for specialist assessment of rhythm problems and inherited cardiac conditions. Cardiac problems may often appear suddenly and so we offer emergency cardiac treatment around the clock for those who need it.

We have an enthusiastic and expert consultant-lead team that aims to deliver high quality care at all times with the support of dedicated specialist nurses and physiologists. We have strong administrative support teams and are extremely active in research projects trying find new treatments
