Getting involved as a fundraiser

There are many different events you could arrange or take part in to help raise money for the RD&E Charity. All you need is ideas and enthusiasm!

Please let us know if you would like to organise your own fundraising event and we will provide you with a letter stating that you are fundraising on behalf of the charity.

Just tell us when you are planning to raise money and the type of event you are organising. Please download our Fundraising Application Form.

We can help you arrange your publicity and advertise your event on this website and in our hospital publications.

Here is some important guidance on making sure your events are safe and legal.

  • Make sure children are always supervised at events and please do not allow children to collect money.
  • Please do not carry out house to house collections – it is illegal without a special licence. Please do not collect money in the street unless you have a street collection licence.
  • Please make sure you have first aid cover if you are organising a larger event, we can provide you with contact information for St John Ambulance or the British Red Cross.
  • Please check with your local authority whether you need to obtain special licences e.g. public entertainment, collection or alcohol.
  • Please tell us if you intend to run a raffle, we need to advise you on the latest rules.
  • To check food hygiene rules please visit or contact the local council.
  • Do check if your event venue has an alcohol licence, if not you will need to contact the local council to obtain a temporary licence.
  • You will need to look at insurance – please discuss this with us.
  • We are grateful for your support but cannot accept liability for any fundraising activity or event you undertake to benefit the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust General Charity (Charity No 1061384).

Getting involved as a company

Wherever you work, fundraising is an easy way to bring your work colleagues together and have a positive impact on your local healthcare services at the same time. It’s win-win!

RD&E Charity provides a highly motivating cause that everyone can relate to and get behind. By partnering with us, we offer hands-on support to ensure your fundraising is a success, clear and compelling communications to motivate staff and recognition of your efforts and contribution.

Companies of all sizes can get involved. For instance, you could adopt RD&E Charity as your Charity of the Year, enter a corporate team in our events, display collection tins on your reception desk or hold a dress up/down day to raise money for us. Other options include:

Make a donation: The easiest way your organisation can help is to simply make a donation. Our services care for everyone across Exeter, East Devon and Mid-Devon. Whatever your chosen area of support, we will make sure your donation has a positive impact for the people who need it the most.

Payroll Giving: This is a unique way for people to give regularly. It allows employees to give money to enhance our hospitals and community services directly from their pay before tax is deducted. We can provide support to help set up Payroll Giving within your company or alternatively if you already have payroll giving, you could just add us to your list of charities to support.

Charity of the Year: Having a designated ‘charity of the year’ can unite staff in a common goal and cultivate a sense of corporate pride. We would be delighted if you would consider choosing our charity and would work closely with you to ensure your fundraising ideas and events are a success. This includes having a designated member of the fundraising team to manage the partnership, keeping you regularly updated on how your support is making a difference for patients.

Employee fundraising: There are so many fun and easy ways your staff can raise money for us. Lunchtimes are great for holding a cake/bun sale or you could simply organise a ‘dress down’ day. Our fundraisers can provide you with plenty of ideas to raise money and can work with you to ensure you host a successful event that your company is proud of.

Matched giving: Many companies operate a matched giving scheme whereby the company matches money raised by staff. Alternatively you could give your employees time to volunteer at one of our charity events. Matched giving is a great way to increase staff morale and provides an even bigger incentive for staff to succeed at their fundraising, not to mention doubling the money for charity!

Gifts-in-kind: Giving a gift-in-kind is an easy way for your company to help us to reduce costs and spend more money directly on our appeals. We are always particularly grateful for donations of products and services, which can be used as prizes for raffles or auctioned at fundraising events.

Sponsored event: Holding an event or a fundraising challenge can be a fantastic way to raise money and at the same time provide employees with an exciting team building experience. Whatever the idea, if you have a group of colleagues who want to do a team skydive or one of our running events, for instance, our fundraising team will work closely with you to maximise success. Once you have selected an activity we will happily deal with the administrative and operational side of the project, leaving you free to enjoy the best bit – raising money and enjoying the experience, hassle free.

Getting involved as a school or college

Students are often the best fundraisers – motivated, passionate and creative! Fundraising likewise provides a fantastic learning experience for all involved and is great for developing teamwork and having a lot of fun. Most importantly, funds raised for the RD&E Charity hugely benefit your community.

RD&E Charity relishes working in partnership with schools, colleges and education groups, and already works with a number of schools across the region.

There are many ways for schools to get involved, be it a non-school uniform day, organising a cake sale, sponsored silence or talent show, for example.

Supporting our charity is a great way to focus the fundraising efforts of your school, for an event, over a short period or as your ‘Charity of the Year’. Regardless, we will provide you with all the support you need to ensure that your fundraising is a success for all involved.

If you want to know more and get involved, then please call the fundraising team on 01392 402040 or email We look forward to hearing from you.

Getting involved as a volunteer

Supporting a charity doesn’t have to be about money; you can also be generous with your time. Volunteering for any charity is a hugely sociable and rewarding activity, and working with the RD&E Charity has the added benefit of having a fantastic benefit for people throughout your community.

We‘re always looking for volunteers for a wide range of activities. Whatever you‘d like to do to help, and however much time you‘ve got to spare, we‘d love to hear from you.

How to become a volunteer

Please contact the RD&E Charity office at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust using the details below for an application form to fill in. You will then be invited to come and discuss the opportunities available.

Before you can become a volunteer you will need to be health screened, and references will be checked. If you will be working on the wards a Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS) will be needed.

We can only offer volunteering opportunities for people living in Exeter, East Devon and Mid-Devon or within easy commuting distance of our hospitals, as we cannot arrange accommodation.

Whatever you have planned our fundraising team is here to help. We are so grateful for your support and look forward to hearing from you. Thank You.
