Parking during the Coronavirus pandemic

In line with government guidance, parking is currently free at Wonford. If you’re coming to the RD&E for an appointment, make sure to use one of our free patient-only car parks:

  • Centre for Women’s Health Car Park
  • Car Park F (opposite the main entrance)
  • Car Park G (two car parks opposite the entrance to PEOC)
  • Car Park C (Oncology car park for the use of oncology and radiotherapy patients and blue badge holders)

Changes to Disabled car parking

During periods of increased demand for patient services provided by the RD&E it has been identified that access via the Ambulance, bus and restricted parking areas at the main entrance of the Wonford Hospital site has been very challenging due to the increased volume of traffic.  Therefore in conjunction with the Trust’s Estates Department we have been reviewing how we can improve this for our patients, visitors and staff.

A move towards finding a solution to the problem of improving traffic flow has been put in place and we have introduced a short stay parking facility within the blue badge parking area adjacent to the main entrance.

On parking in a blue badge parking bay a ticket must be obtained from the ticket machine located at the entrance to this area.  No fee will be required to park.  This ticket will enable a blue badge holder to park for 2 hours with no return within 4 hours.  We hope these measures will improve some of the congestion caused in the area by drivers queuing for these spaces which also affect the through traffic of buses and ambulances.  Alternative parking continues to remain free of charge to blue badge holders in any pay and display car park with no time limit with their blue badge displayed on the dashboard of the vehicle.

We are aware that these measures may cause some inconvenience to our regular patients, visitors and staff but thank them for their cooperation in helping us to address this in the interest of the safety and ease of access to hospital services.

Car parking charges at Wonford and Heavitree Hospitals

The RD&E Trust has provided free parking for patients attending the Wonford and Heavitree sites for regular treatment, for a number of years. The main, although not exclusive, areas that we currently provide free parking for are:

In addition free parking is given to parents who are resident at the hospital as a result of their children being inpatients or who have individual requirements warranting special consideration.

Under section 7 of the Health and Medicines Act 1988 Hospitals were permitted and encouraged to introduce Income Generation schemes, to fund their services.

The current charges for the RD&E on site parking at Wonford and Heavitree as from December 01 2014 are as follows:

In recent years charges, both to staff for parking permits and Pay and Display, have been made after taking into consideration the need to both maintain the existing patient services and providing alternatives to parking.

Income from parking is re-invested by the Trust in green travel initiatives including the funding of the dedicated hospital park and ride service from Digby which about 1000 staff, patients and visitors use daily and consequently significantly reduces parking congestion at the hospital.

The Trust’s Pay and Display machines no longer accept the old £1 coins. When using the machines please ensure that you have enough of the new coins to pay for your stay, alternatively all of our machines accept payments by card.

Car parking near Heavitree Hospital

In addition to the pay and display parking detailed above there is an alternative car park at the Triangle Car Park which is situated approximately ten minutes away. This is not run / managed / owned by the RD&E. To get to this car park take the first right after the police station when coming from Heavitree hospital.
