You are here: Home \ Patients & Visitors \ A-Z Services \ Pathology \ Mortuary

The primary role of the Mortuary is to provide a safe and secure environment in which deceased persons can remain until an undertaker has been chosen and they are clear to be released into their care. The dignity and respect of the person that has died is the primary concern of Mortuary staff. Deceased patients are kept in temperature controlled conditions and in a dignified manner sympathetic to the needs of bereaved relatives.

The Mortuary also provides the facilities to enable Post Mortems to be carried out in a safe and hygienic environment. The staff work closely with local HM Coroner to ensure Post Mortem examinations are carried out as required.

As well as providing Post Mortem services the Mortuary provides facilities and technical support to enable donation of tissue for transplant to take place.
