The Exeter Medical Obesity Service has been commissioned by NHS Devon to help patients with obesity who are keen to make changes. Our team aims to:

Please note that patients seeking NHS-funded bariatric surgery can only do so via EMOS, and must complete at least six months in EMOS.

Referral criteria specified by NHS Devon

Patients 18 years or more, with BMI 40 kg/m2 or over.

Patients aged 18 years or more, with recently diagnosed (within the last 5 years) type 2 diabetes, and BMI 30kg/m2 or over.

Patients with BMI 35kg/m2 or over, and one or more of the following comorbidities:

Adjust BMI for ethnicity. For patients of South Asian, Chinese, Black African or Caribbean origin, lower each BMI threshold by 2.5kg/m2. For example, referral accepted at BMI 32.5 rather than 35 kg/m2. This advice comes from NICE and relates to a greater propensity in these ethnic groups to develop diabetes and its complications.
