Research and Clinical Trials

The dermatology department plays an active role in research designed to improve the understanding and treatment of skin disease and help develop new treatments for patients. Dr Rachel Wachsmuth and Dr Carolyn Charman are members of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Dermatology Network and the UK Dermatology Clinical Trials Network Steering Group, which direct how dermatology research studies are conducted and delivered across the UK.  Mr Robert James is the NIHR Dermatology Research nurse coordinating the delivery of both non-commercial and commercial studies and clinical trials in the dermatology department.

Non-commercial studies

Commercial studies
The department is currently involved in a number of commercial research studies comparing new or existing pharmaceutical drugs or interventions. These studies cover a range of skin conditions including psoriasis, actinic keratosis, melanoma and skin lymphoma.
