Gynaecological Surgery and Oncology


General description of what the service does:

Exeter Gynae Oncology Service provides Surgical and Oncological support for women diagnosed with a Gynaecological Cancer.


The Cancer Centre service at Exeter acts as a tertiary referral centre and serves the Cancer Units at Torbay, North Devon and Plymouth. Surgery for Gynaecological Cancers is performed in by our specialist Gynae Oncology Surgeons Mr John Renninson, Mr Nigel Acheson and Mr Michael Hannemann.


We aim to provide an integrated service ensuring patients have access to high quality specialist care. We pride ourselves on delivering a high quality specialist service with a high regard for the privacy and dignity of each patient as an individual.


We have an excellent partnership with Force Cancer Charity also located at the RD&E Wonford site.

Where are you located:

Centre for Women's Health at the Royal Devon & Exeter hospital Wonford.

Treatments and procedures carried out:

Oncology services include; Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy.

Other treatments / procedures include; Surgery, Colposcopy Clinic, Vulval Clinic and Counselling Services. 

Medical conditions treated:

Gynaecological Cancers: Cervix, Endometrial, Ovary, Vulval; and more rarely, Fallopian Tube. We also refer patients to specialist national centres for advice and treatment planning when necessary.  


Wynard ward and specialities which provide joint working practice including Colorectal (Lyme ward), Plastics (Abbey ward), Urology (Dart ward), Oncology (Yeo ward), Chemotherapy Suite (Cherrybrook ward) and Radiotherapy Department.

Details of patient user / support groups:

The Gynae Oncology Support Group, for women who have received a diagnosis of a Gynaecological Cancer, meets monthly at the Force Cancer Support Centre.Come and join us for a coffee and an opportunity to meet with other women in a similar situation to you. The group aims to be informal, welcoming and supportive. It will be facilitated by Gail, Jacky and Vicky Jay (Women's Health Counsellor).

Additional Information:

We acknowledge that a cancer diagnosis has a great impact on patients and carers physically, emotionally and psychologically. The gynae oncology multi disciplinary team aim to provide the highest possible standard of care to patients and their carers as they travel along their cancer journey. The Gynae Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist liaises closely with Clinical Nurse Specialists in Torbay, North Devon and Plymouth.
