The Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust has won the HSJ’s Specialist Service Redesign Initiative Award for their work to support patients living with cancer.
The team won the award, in collaboration with Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust, for their work on Enhanced Supportive Care (ESC), which looks at promoting earlier implementation of supportive or palliative care for patients with cancer to prevent and manage adverse effects of cancer and cancer treatment.
It was found that ESC improves patient experience at a challenging time in their life. Those who access ESC will have considerably reduced symptom burden, a greater chance of completing chemotherapy, less likelihood of an unplanned admission and less time spent in avoidable visits to hospital, in comparison to those who don’t access ESC.
Tina Grose, Lead Cancer Nurse, said: “I am delighted that this team has been recognised for its patient centered approach, promoting multidisciplinary intervention early in the patient pathway. This approach clearly shows the benefits for patient’s outcomes but also the positive impact across the health community”
