Improving Working Lives (IWL) expresses a commitment by which NHS organisations like the RD&E pledge to improve the working lives of their staff. It is about ensuring that staff can feel valued, involved and supported in their lives at work.
In January 2001 our board of management committed the trust to the Improving Working Lives agenda and in November 2002 we achieved IWL Practice Status. This means we could provide evidence over a wide range of policies and procedures to show we are improving the working lives of staff.
The areas covered are:
Human Resources strategy
Equality and Diversity
Staff Attitude Survey
Communication and Involvement
Health Working
Flexible Working
Training and Development
Staff Benefits and Childcare Services
We have made great strides since achieving Practice Status. For example we are dramatically increasing the number of childcare places available at our nurseries and have introduced a staff lottery.
A staff benefits scheme is being introduced to offer staff discounts with local businesses, and we are developing a specific set of policies to help make work fit into the busy lives of our staff.
