RD&E Anaesthetist Dr David Conn scoops National Teaching Award

RD&E Anaesthetics and Pain Management consultant, Dr David Conn has won the "B Braun Medical Teaching Award", presented annually to a clinician who has shown excellence in regional anaesthesia teaching and research within the UK.

Dr Conn was nominated for the award by Dr Oldman, a consultant at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

Dr Conn said: “I was delighted to receive the award as an acknowledgement of my commitment to teaching. I started twice yearly courses in regional anaesthesia in 1996 for consultants and senior trainees with Barry Nicholls from Taunton. These courses turned into the South West Regional Anaesthesia Group, SOWRA, as more consultants became interested in learning newer and better regional anaesthesia techniques.  SOWRA now runs a training course for 40 trainees, once a year and an annual scientific meeting.”

Dr Conn’s commitment to his profession and its development goes above and beyond teaching. He published a handbook of regional anaesthesia in 2003 with Dr Nicholls and Dr Alice Roberts from the Bristol Anatomy Department and is currently co-authoring a textbook on regional anaesthesia for the Oxford University Press with Dr Nicholls, Dr Warman (a former trainee in Exeter) and Mr David Wilkinson (an anaesthetic practitioner in Exeter).

Dr Conn is currently interested in teaching ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia, because of the improvement in speed and accuracy of this technique.
