About 450 babies a year receive specialist care at the Neo Natal Unit (NNU) in the Centre for Women’s Health at Wonford hospital.

NNU Senior Matron Sue Prosser said: “Parents of premature babies in our care really appreciate the beautifully knitted range of clothing and blankets made by volunteers from all over the county. Hospitals by their nature are clinical settings and these hand made items help to soften the environment for babies as well as providing important warmth and comfort for them. I am sure parents are also comforted by the kindness which lies behind the making of these items.

“We know from our knitters that they have a range of reasons for supporting our Neo Natal Unit in this way, including personal experience in their family, wanting to help others and the social circle which comes with knitting as a group activity in the community. Often we take deliveries of these lovely things but may not always meet the person who made them so this was our way of putting names to faces and showing them how much their hard work is valued.”
