Official opening of the South Devon Kidney Unit

South Devon Kidney Unit opening

The Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust has declared the £2.2 million South Devon Kidney Unit, which provides life-saving treatment to renal patients, officially open. This event marks the successful completion of a series of projects designed at improving our services for our renal patients, including the dialysis units in Honiton and Heavitree, Exeter.

This new unit, based on the Edginswell Business Park in Torbay, is designed to provide haemodialysis and acute dialysis services to patients from across the South Devon area. It began operating in July 2010 to replace the out of date Newton Abbot facility, enabling the Trust to meet increased demand for this specialist service.

The unit features 24 dialysis stations with more efficient equipment which means patients can receive rapid treatment. Up to 144 patients receive care at this unit which has six single side rooms and new clinic rooms for outpatient appointments, treatment and consultations. The environment also includes a dedicated reception, waiting room and better access and parking facilities.

Angela Ballatti, Trust Chairman, said: "This is a first class environment that we are really proud of. Provision of these specialist units in the heart of the community is bringing care closer to the home of patients.

"We are grateful to the Kidney Patients' Association for their continued and valued support to this unit and the Trust renal service."

Richard D'Souza, lead clinician and renal consultant, said: "The new unit has been an exceptional service development progression from the old Newton Abbot site. The investment has provided our South Devon patients with a purpose built unit offering improved facilities and treatment options to receive their life saving care. From personal experience, it gives me great satisfaction to see our patients benefiting from the services provided in this location.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved for their hard work and efforts in the successful delivery of this unit."
