First Steps Nursery is Outstanding

The Royal Devon and Exeter’s First Steps Nursery has been assessed as ‘Outstanding’ in an Ofsted report published only six months after the nursery opened.

The inspection report said: “Children are extremely well cared for in this purposely-designed nursery by a team of enthusiastic staff who highly value each child as an individual.” The report also praised the nursery for its organisation, leadership, partnership with parents, high quality resources, safety and hygiene.

The self-funding nursery, which opened in September 2010, is on the RD&E Wonford hospital site and caters for the children of hospital staff, providing a safe, secure and friendly environment near their work place. Twenty six staff look after 168 children aged up to five years old.

Director of Human Resources Lynn Lane said: “ We are delighted by this achievement which is testimony to the calibre of Childcare Services Manager Kay Rosslee, First Steps Nursery Manager Marilyn Delve and the staff team.  To receive an assessment of outstanding when the nursery staff had to maintain ‘business as usual’ for the children whilst moving into a new nursery building is something to be particularly proud of. This could not have been achieved without the commitment of the staff and the support of the parents. It is great for colleagues at the hospital to have peace of mind knowing that their children are in a safe, stimulating environment conveniently close to their place of work. If staff know their children are well looked after they can focus on their working lives which is better for the quality of services our patients receive.”
