RD&E shortlisted for national Patient Safety Award

The Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust has been shortlisted for a national patient safety award.

The annual awards are presented by the Nursing Times and the Health Service Journal as a celebration of the best examples of innovative work across the NHSto improve patient safety and raise awareness in the healthcare community about the good practice so that others can improve their services.

The Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust has been shortlisted for the 'Changing Culture' category with eight other contenders from around the country.

RD&E Director of Nursing & Patient Care Em Wilkinson-Brice, said: "A significant amount of work has been invested by RD&E staff to create a safety culture within theatres and on wards which is tangible and constructive. We have introduced new ways to capture the views of our patients about their experience whilst in our care and this has been a powerful driver for improving our safety culture and the quality of patient care. Listening to our patients and acting on their feedbackhas reaped more patient satisfaction and that in turn has boosted staff morale where we introduced this activity. For example Matron Debbie Larsen who led the patient feedback work on her ward found that her team responded positively to improved communication, team working and quality standards. She reported a significant reduction in staff sickness rates which dropped from 9.73% in November 2009 to only 2.74% in the same month in 2010. Staff motivation and satisfaction from their working life does improve if they hear that they are making a difference to patient care.

"We are really delighted to have been shortlisted for this award because there is a lot of very innovative service improvement being achieved in the NHS."

The award winners are announced in March 2011 and will receive a trophy and a speaker place at the Patient Safety Congress in May.
