Patient Information
By the term ‘oesophago-gastric’ we mean
the gullet and stomach. These parts of the
digestive tract of the body are susceptible to
developing cancers.
The incidence of oesophago-gastric cancer is now increasing faster than any other cancer in the Western world, with a more than 400% rise over the last three decades. The reasons for this unprecedented epidemic in this disease are not clearly known.
The nature of the disease is changing. It used to be associated with heavy smoking or alcohol consumption but this is no longer the case, and may be linked to our modern lifestyles and diet. The risk of disease does increases with age, and men of Caucasian extraction seem to be particularly vulnerable.
