Photo of operationThe Royal Devon and Exeter has a long and proud history of providing high quality and innovative care. The Exeter Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Centre and its pioneering development of Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy maintains this tradition.

Since designation as a specialist Upper GI cancer centre in 2004, our staff have strived to develop their skills and to be at the forefront of the treatment of this disease.

 

At the heart of this excellent and valued service is our team approach to the care and treatment of patients. Our upper GI cancer team encompasses a comprehensive range of skills and expertise from our dedicated on site staff including nurse specialists, consultant surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, anaesthetists, gastroenterologists, physiotherapists, dietitians and counsellors. Pre and post-operative ward care for patients is provided in a dedicated upper GI cancer unit. The focus of their energies, knowledge and skills is to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients and their families.

 

The Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust is committed to maintaining a programme of investment in training, research, state of the art equipment, recruitment of specialist staff and pioneering surgical techniques. Our work to date, has made a signifi cant contribution to the development of the knowledge base, achieved a greater understanding of how best to treat this cancer, improved the quality of life and off ered choices to our patients.

Photo of Mr CooperWe see over 200 patients a year with newly diagnosed oesophago-gastric cancer and can offer a wide range of appropriate treatments, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery.

 

The RD&E has been a pioneering hospital in many of these treatments and has led the way in the development of High-Dose Rate Brachytherapy and Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy.
