The Emergency Medical Unit is a 31 bedded admission and assessment unit for acute medical admissions. Referrals are taken 24hrs per day from the GP, Emergency Department or inter-department within the Trust. The Unit comprises of four side-rooms and four mixed bays, two of which are defined as monitored bays enabling the assessment and care of critically ill patients. The Unit team comprises of 1 Unit Matron, 4 Ward Sisters/Charge Nurse, 3 Consultants. The Unit is supported by a team of 5 Ward Clerks who provide 08.00-22.00 cover: Mon-Fri and 08.00-18.00 cover at weekends. A Discharge Secretary provides the timely provision of discharge summaries for GP's. In addition a Unit Administrator supports the managerial and administration functions of EMU and its senior nurse team.
An Admission Co-ordinator (a designated band 5, 6 or 7 RCN) carries an admission bleep for medicine 24hrs per day, enabling appropriate communication and decision-making regarding medical admissions to the EMU, clinical speciality or community hospitals. Effective multi-disciplinary working is core to the medical admission and assessment process incorporating the Operations, Access and Discharge Facilitator teams. The Shift Admission Co-ordinator and Unit Co-ordinator will determine the most effective ward or department transfer based on patient clinical need and specialist healthcare requirements. |

to providing effective and confidential communication with nursing and healthcare staff on EMU: EMU is a short stay area for emergency admission and assessment only. Patient stay on EMU can be as little as four-six hours prior to discharge/transfer, or as long as five days if a patient requires transfer to a specialist medical ward |
