Cytology
This involves the microscopic examination of individual cells rather than tissue samples. The cells may be obtained from a variety of sites such as body cavities, breast or lungs.
This Pathology discipline is best known for its work in the National Cervical Screening Programme which involves detecting early abnormalities in the cervix to prevent cervical cancers. In 2005 it converted to "liquid based" techniques which have improved the diagnostic efficiency and reduced the need for repeat samples.
