As a close-knit multi-disciplinary team we aim to provide holistic, evidence-based care and information to renal patients and their families.
Our Patients
We treat patients with:
- Acute kidney failure
- Chronic kidney failure
- Haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis needs
- Kidney transplants
- Other kidney diseases needing specialist input
Our Services
Our services include a comprehensive outpatient clinic service with:
- transplant clinic
- general nephrology clinics
- haemodialysis clinics
- peritoneal dialysis clinics
- pre-dialysis clinics
- satellite hospital clinics
There is a renal daycase service on Sid ward at the RD&E Wonford Site. Creedy ward at the RD&E Wonford is now a 26 bedded inpatient and emergency dialysis ward. Haemodialysis services have now been transferred to the brand new unit at the RD&E Heavitree site. The new unit has 24 dialysis stations and six single rooms along with improved waiting areas and better parking/patient facilities.
Many outpatients receive dialysis at our satellite dialysis units in South Molton, Torbay, Honiton (all NHS managed), Taunton and Yeovil (managed by private dialysis companies). All haemodialysis units operate 6 days a week Monday to Saturday and provide morning, afternoon and twilight shifts. There is also a home haemodialysis programme but plans are underway to offer this treatment option more widely.
Peritoneal dialysis is provided as a home-based treatment where patients undertake this themselves; the Unit currently supports 80 patients at home and they are supported by our Home Care Nurse Specialists.
We have specialist nurses in Home Care, Anaemia Management, Vascular Access, Peritoneal Dialysis Education & Training and Live Donor Transplant Nurse.
Outpatient clinics are held in Exeter, however we also have very wide spread out reach consultant clinics, nurse led clinics and day case procedures. Outreach consultant out patient clinics are in Barnstaple, Taunton and Torbay hospitals with nurse led clinics being held in many local commununity hospitals throughout our catchment area. The weekly consultant-led transplant clinic is based in Exeter.
