Exeter Medical Obesity Service
The Exeter Medical Obesity Service has been commissioned by Devon PCT to optimise the care of obese patients who meet the referral criteria. Our multidisciplinary team aims to:
-
Support patients to achieve 5-10% weight loss through sustainable lifestyle changes using a range of non-surgical options.
-
Provide education, guidance and specialist follow-up for patients who do require bariatric surgery.
-
Support primary care and the surgical centre(s) in the long term follow-up of post-operative patients.
Referral criteria
We can only see patients who meet the following criteria:
-
Age over 18 years.
-
Referred in writing by their GP.
-
One of the following body mass index (BMI) criteria:
-
BMI 45 or over
-
BMI 35 or over with at least one comorbidity as defined by NICE: (uncontrolled hypertension, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis, uncontrolled dyslipidaemia)
-
Patients must have demonstrated commitment to losing weight through participation in primary care/community weight management services, for a minimum of six months (if available). Patients must also have had a trial of oral weight loss agents, i.e. Orlistat, prior to referral. An exception is made for patients with a BMI over 50, who need not have tried Orlistat prior to referral.
Where the clinician feels that exceptional clinical need can be demonstrated for patients who do not fulfil the above criteria, the referral route is via the Individual Patient Funding Panel.
