All patients with diabetes should have their feet examined by the General Practitioner/Practice Nurse to assess risk. Only those with At Risk Feet (high-risk ± compounding risk factors) should be referred to PODIATRY. Those at low risk DO NOT need to be referred, they should receive education and be given footcare leaflets and be reviewed on an annual basis.
Three Diabetic Liaison Podiatrists (DLCs) were appointed in September 1999, see photo to the right. Their role is:-
-
To co-ordinate diabetic clinics.
-
To be a source of expert advice for lower grade Podiatrists, visiting Podiatrists on a regular basis in their local clinics.
-
Audit care.
-
To ensure effective prioritisation of caseloads.
-
One DLC to participate in a shared clinic with the principal Podiatrist in the secondary diabetic foot clinic every three months.
The appointed DLCs are:
-
Russell Aggett, Exeter (01392 356126)
-
Sue Pyle, East Devon (01392 356126)
-
Jeanne Curgenven, Mid Devon (01392 356126)
They can be contacted by telephone or using designated referral form. They are happy to visit practices to discuss footcare. Monofilaments and leaflets can be purchased by contacting the Diabetic Foot Clinic (01392 402204).
