Gynaecology services at the Centre for Women’s Health consists of:
- The Women’s Clinic area with an ultrasound, antenatal assessment unit, antenatal clinic and gynae outpatients in suites of separate consulting and examination rooms for the privacy and dignity of patients
- The gynaecology assessment unit with five examination rooms where early pregnancy advice and Colposcopy takes place. This then leads into:
- The 33-bedded gynaecology ward called Wynard consisting of five four-bed rooms, 11 single rooms all with en-suite bathrooms and a two-bed high-dependency area
- The day surgery recovery area is on Wynard ward so any patients who cannot go home the same day will already be in the correct area for care. The lift in the centre of Wynard will take patients to theatre directly above.
Clinics
Nurse-led clinics attached to Wynard Ward are:
- Colposcopy and smear clinic
- Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic for ladies 6-12 weeks pregnant with bleeding and pain
- One stop post menopausal bleeding clinic and the pre-operative assessment clinic are held in outpatients
- Post operative follow up clinics
- Termination clinics
- Oncology services
The ward also works alongside the Peninsula Centre for Reproductive Medicine, patient regularly admitted to the ward, post fertility treatment.
Patients also come from the Day Case Unit with post-operative complications.
Staffing

Staff range from Registered Nurses, Health Care Assistants, Auxiliary Nurses undertaking NVQ and Student Nurses from the University of Plymouth and Open University, as well as post registration back to nursing students and medical students from the postgraduate medical centre.
Many staff are trained to assist in clinics, as well as working within the ward environment. The ward liases closely with theatres, day case, outpatients and maternity and our Consultants also cover Obstetrics.
Women’s Health Counsellors are part of the team providing care in The Centre for Women’s Health. We offer emotional support for women accessing the Gynaecology services.
Nursing Philosophy of nursing staff on Wynard Ward
- Promote health, prevent illness and meet the physical and psychological needs of the individual women and her family.
- Involve the women in a partnership with the nursing staff, enabling us to educate, encourage and support her whilst in our care.
- Enable the woman to maintain/regain independence and return to the community.
- Provide a holistic approach and a warm supportive environment for the women in our care.
Specific skills to Gynaecological nursing, as well as general nursing skills, include being:
- Able to acknowledge the woman as the most important member of the health care team and reflect this when giving care
- Able to show sensitivity and empathy with the intimate needs of a woman.
- Able to provide the individual care using team nursing
- Able to value and encourage the support of a woman’s family and friends may give her in times of stress and grief
- Aware of and able to inform the woman and her family of relevant support groups
- Able to ensure complete confidentiality
- Aware of ethical issues, adopting a non-judgemental approach.
