Sub-Specialty and conditions treated: Gynaecological Oncology. Assessment and treatment of patients with suspected and confirmed cervical, endometrial, ovarian, and vulval cancers. Colposcopy and cervical screening, assessment of patients with abnormal smears.

Special Clinical Interests: Gynaecological cancers, colposcopy, and patients with family history of cancers.

Research interests: Family history of cancers, ovarian cancer treatment, detecting endometrial cancers on liquid based cytology smear tests.

Ward(s) worked on / with: Base ward is Wynard ward. Also work on joint surgical procedures with colorectal, urological, plastics and breast surgery teams at the RD&E. Connected to North Devon District Hospital MDT and clinics and Colposcopy clinics in Tiverton hospital.

Two current research grants to fund a PhD student whose project is “The role of omental endothelial cells in ovarian cancer metastasis”, at the Peninsula Medical School.

The Gynaecology Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialists Gail and Jacky work closely with the other members of the Gynae Oncology Multidisciplinary Team to support women and their families / carers from initial investigation through to diagnosis of a Gynaecological Cancer and recommended treatment.

 

Gail and Jacky are present when the patient is informed they have cancer, preparing patients for all stages of treatment, including Surgery, Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy. Support is provided throughout the patients' cancer journey, working closely with the Gynaecology ward (Wynard), Outpatient clinics and specialist services allied to Gynae Oncology, to provide a seamless service.

 

Details of patient user / support groups:

The Gynae Oncology Support Group, for women who have received a diagnosis of a Gynaecological Cancer, meets monthly at the Force Cancer Support Centre.

Come and join us for a coffee and an opportunity to meet with other women in a similar situation to you.

The group aims to be informal, welcoming and supportive. It will be facilitated by Gail, Jacky and Vicky Jay (Women's Health Counsellor).

Women's Health Counsellor

Women’s Health Counsellor

 

The Women’s Health Counsellor provides a confidential service where women can express their thoughts, feelings and concerns.

 

Experienced counsellors Vicky Jay (Pictured) and Louise Swiggs between them cover Monday to Friday. Most patients are seen by appointment after hospital discharge but the counsellors do respond to requests from ward staff to visit women during their hospital stay.
